Leaving Orvieto with Glimpses of Florence. August 1, 2019 (iPhone photos)
Photo description: Train station, Orvieto. Our host at our airbnb recommended a restaurant that we were looking forward to going to. When we got there it was closed. The hangry members of this group were very hangry. The note, when I put it into Google Translator reads, “Closed for dinner. Domaine reopens”. A glimpse of Giotto’s tower. Interior of the restaurant where we had dinner, Osteria Pepó. It was empty because we were very late and they were closing. The Duomo. We walked and came upon this gorgeous Cathedral and Giotto’s Tower. I climbed it 16 years ago, the reward is a gorgeous 360 degree view of Florence.
How is it that no matter how many days we plan in one place, whether it is 2 or 4 or 10, we are always ready to move on to the next city? (I say that, but it’s not entirely true. Sometimes it is very difficult for me to leave a place I love, especially a tropical place with a beach. I always cry for one full day before we leave.)
Today, I had no problem leaving Orvieto. Orvieto is a strange place. It just doesn’t feel welcoming. We love you and goodbye.
Onto Florence!
I love traveling to a new place. During the train ride, I’m so excited about going somewhere new. There are all the good bits of anticipation, it’s all new, it’s a beginning, it hasn’t started yet, so it’s not almost over. I love it. It feels like a full time. And trains are relaxing. The trip from Orvieto took almost 3 hours. We arrived at the Santa Maria Novella train station in Florence around 15:00, jumped in a taxi and arrived at our apartment. This apartment is amazing! It’s beautiful and the shower is awesome. I haven’t been talking about the showers that we have experienced, but not all showers are good.
Andros, Greece: Awful shower. It was hot for one minute, then ice cold for 2 minutes, hot for 1 minute, ice cold for 2 minutes, on and on. The fucking worst. Not even worth showering. Fuck those showers.
Rome: Tiniest shower ever built. Aaron couldn’t even move. Picture the scene when Buddy the Elf is showering in the North Pole. We made the boys shower there once, then not again. It wasn’t worth the agony. Also, the hot water in the kitchen would not work unless the hot water was on the in the shower. Meaning, we had to run the shower just so we could do dishes. I do not understand.
Orvieto: Great shower! YAY!
Florence: Gorgeous, luxurious, walk-in shower. Fabulous!
The boys and I went to the grocery store in Florence. It’s 1 block away. We got delicious turkey and bread. Ciopolini onions, olives. Fruit! I told you I was going to get fruit! Grapes, peaches, cherries. GF bread. I found a brand of gf bread in Europe that is delicious! I need to ask New Seasons to carry it. Udi’s and New Cascadia can go fuck themselves. We had an awesome, delicious picnic at our apartment for lunch. We will do that again tomorrow, but we will buy more meat and bread at the Mercato Centrale.
Tomorrow we have a 3 hour walking tour. It starts at 9:30. You should hear Lavi when we tell him we have to be somewhere in the morning. He is the worst. Moaning. I can’t even.
More tomorrow!
Love you and miss you!!!
Love, Eden
